The Importance Of Using Proper Firewood

Did you know the fuel you use in your wood-burning fireplace, stove, or insert makes a big difference in how well your system functions? Many assume you can throw any wood you find or buy in the fireplace, but using seasoned wood is really the way to go. Failing to do so increases the amount of acidic water that gets deposited into your chimney. As you can imagine, this isn’t good for your structure, and it can make your fires a lot smokier, as well!

So, what can you look out for in terms of well-seasoned wood? Wood that has been properly dried out will not be as heavy, so go for pieces that are easier to lift and that make a hollow, “clunking” noise when smacked together. The wood will also look older and less fresh. Logs that are darker in color, split at the ends, and shorter in length will typically be better for burning.

If you prefer to season your own wood, we have some great tips for you there, too! Keep the wood pile off the ground and in an area that is well-ventilated. You want your fuel to be well-protected, yet in an area where plenty of sunlight and wind can get to the ends, thus encouraging them to dry out as fast as possible. Most wood needs to seasoned for at least six months before being suitable for use.

Do You Need An Inspection?

Unseasoned firewood can cause creosote and other debris to build up faster than normal, so it’s always wise to have your system inspected before kicking off your burning season. In fact, annual inspections are highly recommended by both the CSIA and the NFPA. This regular maintenance keeps your system happier and healthier, thus lowering your risk of chimney fires, house fires, gas leaks, and more.

A clean, well-functioning fireplace also helps create warmer and less smoky fires, ensuring countless enjoyable and relaxing evenings all throughout the fall and winter months. The last thing anyone wants is a big cloud of smoke filling their living room and ruining a festive mood! A thorough inspection from our team will ensure you’re good to go, no matter what.
